The end of May, the first Saturdays with the whole terrace booked, and then two pieces of bad news in a single week. Tanja, who runs a family restaurant in the Vipava Valley with her husband, learned that their assistant cook was leaving because of a move, and that one of the waitresses would not be coming back for the summer. There were only three weeks left until the peak season.

In this article we show how Tanja went about recruiting on delaj.si, how much it cost her and what you can take away from her story.

The problem: little time, lots of competition

In tourist areas, almost every restaurant and café is looking for staff at the same time. A job ad that simply sits somewhere in a list can quickly sink among all the others. Tanja needed two things: for her ad to go live immediately, and for job seekers to notice it before they committed to another employer.

Step 1: registration and a free job ad

Tanja created a company account and opened the post a job page. Your first active job ad on delaj.si is free, runs for 30 days and goes live immediately, with no waiting for approval.

She first posted an ad for an assistant cook or cook, as the kitchen was her bigger worry. When writing it, she followed a few simple rules:

  • she put the job title and location in the headline,
  • she clearly stated the period of work (June–September) and the working hours, including weekends,
  • she added what they offer: meals on shift, help with transport and the possibility of extending the arrangement,
  • she wrote down when she would like the new colleague to start.

Since she also needed a waiter, she posted a second ad. Each additional ad active at the same time costs €4.99.

Step 2: the URGENT badge

Both vacancies were genuinely urgent, so Tanja added the URGENT badge. It costs €6.99 per ad and remains valid until the ad expires. For two ads, that comes to 2 × €6.99 = €13.98.

The badge tells job seekers straight away that the employer is hiring quickly and that it is worth applying now, not in a week’s time. For seasonal work, where candidates are often choosing between several offers, this is a useful signal.

Step 3: promoting the job ad

Tanja was in luck: because she was among the first 50 companies to post an ad, she received 7 days of promotion A, B and C free of charge with her first ad as part of the launch offer. For the first week, her ad was therefore shown in the large slider at the top of the home page, among the featured ads and in the compact list alongside other ads.

After a week she still had no cook, so on the Promote a job page she bought the cheaper promotion C for 15 days. The calculation:

  • €2.99 × 15 days = €44.85
  • discount for 15 days or more: −25% (−€11.21)
  • total: €33.64

If the launch offer is no longer available, you could, for example, opt for promotion B for 7 days: €7.99 × 7 = €55.93, or €50.34 with the −10% discount. All prices include VAT, and all options are listed on the pricing page.

It is worth knowing that promoted ads are displayed in random order, so they all have an equal chance. When all slots are taken, your purchase joins a queue, so it makes sense to book promotion in good time rather than on the last day.

How much it cost Tanja in total

  • first ad (cook): €0
  • second ad (waiter): €4.99
  • two URGENT badges: €13.98
  • promotion A, B and C for 7 days: €0 (launch offer)
  • promotion C for 15 days: €33.64

Total: €52.61. She paid by card. If you expect to post several ads over the year, you might consider credit with a bonus: a €100 top-up gives you €115 of credit, and a €250 top-up gives you €300.

The outcome: applications and interviews

The first applications for the waiter role arrived the very next day. Candidates applied with an uploaded CV or an online CV, and Tanja replied to them directly through the portal’s messaging. After a few interviews, she chose a student with experience of serving on a terrace.

Finding a cook took longer. There were fewer applications, so Tanja bought one month of access to the candidate database (€48.99). She filtered candidates by the hospitality sector and by region, and sent offers to two of them through the portal. Candidates’ contact details are not displayed, so all communication took place via messages until a candidate chose to share their details. One of them responded and, after a trial day, started work in mid-June.

Don’t forget the formalities

Seasonal work can be arranged in various ways, from a fixed-term employment contract to student work. Which arrangement suits you and what the contract must include depends on the circumstances, so consult an accountant or an employment law specialist before signing.
